Ms. Boroughs said she was excited about winning the competition and was in fact anxious before the experience started and encouraged other students to take part in such competitions.

The local competition was dubbed a fun-filled way to encourage reading within the structure of an exciting, healthy schools’ contest while allowing schools to showcase their best readers who are eight to nine years of age.

She went up against Selena Williams of Doctor William Connor Primary, Corin Jeffers of Cayon Primary, Jackie Peetes of Tyrell-Williams Primary and Joseline Barbarles-Esien of Lynn Jeffers Primary.

They were required to read two unseen pieces, a narrative and a news item. They were then judged on their fluency, accuracy, enunciation, smoothness, confidence and expression.
