An Evening of Caribbean Expressions

The University of the West Indies Press Release (18th April, 2013) — The University of the West Indies Open Campus St. Kitts & Nevis in collaboration with Island Xpressions will host an event entitled ‘An Evening of Caribbean Expressions’ on Sunday 28th April, 2013. The venue for this event is Mapau, Port Zante and it is scheduled to begin at 6:00pm. The event that will feature poets from St. Kitts and Nevis as well as Dr. Mark McWatt and Dr. Phillip Nanton of the UWI Cave Hill Campus is free. It precedes workshops for teachers being organized as a part of the Caribbean Poetry Project.

The Caribbean Poetry Project launched in 2010, has brought together leading poets, teachers, educationalists, scholars, publishers and arts administrators in an exciting collaboration working to develop joint research with the University of Cambridge and the University of the West Indies on Caribbean poetry. The aims of the project also include: developing and extending knowledge, understanding and creative engagement with Caribbean poetry among secondary school students aged 11-18; support of teachers in developing knowledge and understanding of Caribbean poetry and in becoming confident in tackling it creatively in the classroom and increasing the representation of Caribbean poets on the Poetry Archive found at http://www.poetryarchive.org/poetryarchive/home.do

The Caribbean Poetry Project workshops for teachers will take place on 29th and 30th April, 2013 at the Ocean Terrace Inn and have been organized with the assistance of the Ministry of Education in St. Kitts. So far the team has travelled to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda and Grenada. The Cave Hill team is being led by Dr. Sandra Robinson, Caribbean Poetry Project Coordinator and the facilitators of the workshop include Dr. Mark McWatt, Dr. Phillip Nanton and Mr. Samuel Soyer. The team also includes Ms. Gina Burnham, Research Assistant, of the Caribbean History Project, Cave Hill.
