Barbados in charge Versus Leewards

Sports Page—Thursday 25th July 2013–It was an obvious set up. Ross Powell facing up to the aggressive Bajan seamer, Jerome Jones knew that something was up. The captain had suddenly placed two helmeted fielders on either side of the pitch—one at silly mid off and the other at silly mid on. The question was: Was it going to be another searing bouncer or would it be the double bluff and a screaming Yorker.

As the lanky left arm fast bowler raced in, the small crowd at the Conaree grounds looked on in anticipation. Ross Powell seemed to have made up his mind that it would be a bouncer and had no time to rethink his strategy. It was the perfect Yorker. By the time he brought his bat down, his middle stump was cart wheeling out of the ground in spectacular fashion—-and the Bajans celebrated. Shortly after, Saeed Williams edged to the wicketkeeper and the Leewards were in deep trouble.

The lanky Theron Bussue, on debut, played a stodgy hand for 21 but the Leewards eventually succumbed for 126 in their first innings.

The Bajans batted a second time and declared at 172 for 4, giving the Leewards an improbable victory target of 301. At the end of the second day, they were 24 for 2 with Ross Powell batting for the second time in the day on 6 not out
