Boosting Performing Arts Development

(ZIZ)– Minister of Culture, the Hon Marcella Liburd said plans to renovate Carnival Village are part of an overall goal to boost the development of the local arts sector.

Minister Liburd said there are ongoing discussions for the establishment of a National Arts Academy but in the meantime, her ministry is taking steps to provide development opportunities for everyone in the arts sector.

“In the renovation of Carnival Village would be a section for artists to develop their various art forms, which speaks, to some extent, to the Academy.  Because it’s not just about people in the performing arts but we would want all of the wrap-around services also,” she said.

Liburd said it is important to provide training for non-performers in the industry as well in order to strengthen the arts sector as a whole.

“So that we can have producers who are trained, people in sound, people in lighting, onstage management, all of these things need to be developed in terms of professionally, so that is where we’re going,” she said.

Minister Liburd believes it is important that artists recognize the role they play in the economic development of the country as the ministry takes culture to another level.
