Culturama Calendar sees scheduling changes

AntonioAbonatyLiburdBZIZ News — The Culturama calendar of activities has seen some scheduling changes as the organising committee prepares for the 40th edition of Nevis’ Culturama Festival dubbed ‘C40’.

During a recent interview with Executive Director of the Festivals’ Secretariat Antonio Liburd, he spoke of some of those changes.

“We’ll now have the Band Clash on the Saturday night of the Emancipation Day weekend so the Band Clash would now be staged on the night that the Calypso Show would’ve normally been staged, that is Saturday 2nd August then, the Ms. Culture Queen Pageant, which would’ve been on the following night: Sunday 3rd, the Ms. Culture Queen Pageant is now moved to Friday August 1st.”

Liburd then explained the reason for the scheduling changes.

“We wanted to give the calypso show to the Sunday night, the eve before j’ouvert, as is done all over the Caribbean where there are major festivals throughout the Caribbean so persons can leave the calypso show and go to one of the many pre-j’ouvert fetes that are being planned for C40 and then from the pre-j’ouvert fetes, they would move straight into j’ouvert,” he explained.

The 2014 Culturama committee comprises of chairperson Deborah Tyrell, Queens’ Committee chairperson Kandor Freeman, chairperson of the Mr. Kool Committee Vaughn Anslyn, Seba Jones and Rohan Isles for the Junior and Adult Street Parades’ Committees respectively, chairman of the Band Clash Committee Patrick Daniel, Shirley Wilkes who will chair the Mr. and Ms. Talented Youth Pageant Committee, chairperson of the Junior and Senior Calypso Committees and the Judges’ Committee Keith Glasgow, Ricky Hill of the Street Activities Committee and Karen Claxton-Amory of the Cultural Food Fair Committee.

Lorna Hunkins and Jean Caines are the committees’ Financial Comptroller and Secretary respectively.
