Federation’s Prime Minister lauds victorious netball and football teams

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JULY 26TH 2011 – The Federation’s Under-23 Football and Netball Teams were congratulated Tuesday for their star-stellar performance in regional tournaments.

Leading three chairs for both teams, St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas commended the sportsmen and women for recent victories saying focus, discipline and confidence were the ingredients to winning.

“The St. Kitts-Nevis Football Team have filled us all with indescribable pride. We watched in recent days as they went from strength to strength. Always giving of their very best. Filling the Warner Park Football Stadium with a degree of excitement that defied description. Congratulations to our champions! You have done yourselves proud,” said Prime Minister Douglas during his weekly radio programme “Ask the Prime Minister” on Tuesday.

Pointing out that at times the focus is on those young people who have gone astray, Prime Minister Douglas saluted the Under 23 National Netball Team, who brought home the OECS championship one week ago.

“It proves that that is not the complete story of our precious country. And the phenomenal performance of our under-23 football team proves that as well. Young people do not just show up at a sporting event and win. Winning results from sacrifice. Winning comes from discipline. Winning comes from hard work. And determination. From all the characteristics that make individuals, families, communities, and nations great!! So we commend these people, we applaud these young people, and we urge all of our nation’s young people to find something at which they can excel – sports, academia, sales, IT, farming, catering, science, the arts, helping others. And in whatever they choose, in whatever they love, the must strive to be champions,” Dr. Douglas said.

On Monday night, the St. Kitts and Nevis Under 23 footballers beat Haiti 2-1 to take top spot in the CFU Olympic Group D Qualifier Tournament.

On July 6, the St. Kitts Netball Team took the 2011 OECS Under 23 Netball Championship title after winning five games and drawing one. St. Kitts held defending champions to a 40-40 draw.
