Federation’s Teachers Trained to Assess Primary School Reading Levels

St. Kitts (EMU) –: Reading Coordinator at the Curriculum Development Unit (CDU), Jacquelyn Lewis Bassue says primary school teachers throughout the Federation now have the tools to assess the reading abilities of children in their classrooms.

According to Mrs. Bassue a training workshop in Reading Assessment which the educators completed on February 10-18 was the follow up to an evaluation conducted by the Learning Support Department of the Curriculum Development Unit in 2009. It was designed to ascertain national primary reading levels.

Teacher at the Sandy Point Primary School Michelle Rochester Woodley told the Education Media Unit said that after two decades in the classroom she has seen a marked improvement in the reading abilities of students following the interventions implemented post 2009.

The trained graduate teacher had some sound advice for parents regarding investments in their children.

She added that the ability to read helps comprehension, critical analysis and other problem solving skills.

Beach Allen Primary School Teacher, Andre Tyrell also stated his positive observation.

According to Reading Coordinator Jacquelyn Bassue, the results of the assessment would guide the curriculum development process for reading programmes in schools and will also be used by the Ministry of Education in its Education project planning. She added that other stakeholders would also be apprised of the results.

Teachers who participated in the workshop would know for certain just how students have improved when they start the implementation of the assessment procedures learnt at the workshop later this month.
