Government delivers for St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services

Basseterre, St. Kitts (SKNIS) — The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis presented a one million dollar state-of-the art Rosenbauer Timberwolf fire tender to the St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services today (May 21) at a ceremony at the Basseterre Fire Station.

The American made fire tender, is a “best in class” and is equipped with hose stations on both sides, increased carrying capacity for water and other fire extinguishing agents, four wheel drive and excellent ground clearance. These are some of the incorporated assets which makes this tender ideally suited for combating both urban or rural (off road brush) fires.

Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, Osbert Desuza presented remarks from Prime Minister Harris, who was attending the Caribbean Development Bank, Board of Governors meeting, to the gathering of Fire Service Officers.

The prepared statement highlighted a meeting on April 23 between the Prime Minister and the men and women of the Fire and Rescue Services.

“My government heard your concerns and in time, is prepared to address them in a comprehensive and effective manner,”he said. “The investment by my government in this tender is a small but significant step in addressing some of the concerns you expressed in relation to the need to upgrade the quality of equipment with which you deliver this very essential service. My government will continue to support this department and appeal to corporate citizens to partner with the government to ensure that jointly, the best and most modern tools needed to deliver this service are acquired.”

It was emphasized that “moving forward means smarter work and more creative strategic deployment of limited resources. “To be successful, more emphasis must be directed at a greater need for knowledge and skills. The use of appropriate technology and ongoing training of key personnel are very critical in building an efficient and effective department,” Mr Desuza said.

“Government takes its responsibility of safeguarding the lives and properties of the citizens of this beautiful federation of St. Kitts and Nevis seriously. I give a commitment that you will not be neglected. As we move forward in this ever challenging economic environment, the government pledges its continued robust support to the Fire and Rescue Services,” he added.

A note of thanks was expressed to the manufacturing company Rosenbauer America for designing and building a tender to the specific requirements of the St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services. The statement also encouraged the officers to take care of the equipment, by ensuring that routine and comprehensive maintenance is accomplished to ensure the full service life of the tender.

Appreciation was also given to the officers.

“On behalf of the Government and people of the St. Kitts and Nevis, I want to commend you for the risky work that you do,” said Mr. Desuza. “The risks involved in your work do not make it attractive, and so we are grateful to you. Keep up the good work and I wish you well.”
