Health Ministry stages Wellness Fair on World Blood Donor Day

KINGSTON, Jamaica – – In recognition of World Blood Donor Day on Saturday, June 14, the Ministry of Health, through the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS), will host a ‘Donor Fest Blood Drive and Wellness Fair’ at the Blood Collection Centre at National Chest Hospital in Kingston.

This year’s Blood Donor Day, themed ‘Safe blood for saving mothers’ will, according to the World Health Organisation, seek to increase awareness about why timely access to safe blood and blood products is essential as part of a comprehensive approach to prevent maternal deaths.

Donor Fest is expected to have several booths where people can get health checks, free of cost, while also having the opportunity to donate blood.

Blood Donor Organiser for the NBTS, Igol Allen, while appealing for support from groups and individuals, told OBSERVER ONLINE that the aim is to collect at least 180 units of blood on the day.

“We all need to play our part to help others,” Allen said.
