Inland Revenue Department to Support the Growth and Development of Small and Medium Businesses in St. Kitts and Nevis Through Public Education Initiative

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, MAY 31TH 2012 (Inland Revenue Department) – The Inland Revenue Department is set to begin a major taxpayer education program aimed at providing support and advice, particularly to small and medium sized businesses in St. Kitts and Nevis. Given the continuing uncertainty and challenges in the domestic and international economy, this initiative will provide an opportunity for the owners of small and medium micro business to dialogue with the Inland Revenue Department.

It is hoped that through this process of consultation and education, the Inland Revenue Department will develop a better tax roll, which in turn will enable us to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the issues that are peculiar to improving the compliance and understanding of small and medium operating taxpayers. Additionally, this new program is expected to provide us with information necessary to better advise and educate small and medium size businesses, ultimately supporting growth and expansion of these categories of businesses.

Staff from the Inland Revenue Departments in St. Kitts and in Nevis will be visiting various communities around the Federation. The exercise is expected to commence on Thursday 31st May 2012, in Challengers Village, St. Kitts. The Departments is humbly soliciting the kind cooperation and support from all concerned persons as well embark on this very important and critical program.

As the project unfolds across the country, team members will be identify themselves and have a short dialogue with small and medium sized owned businesses to better ascertain nature of the trading entity. Business owners will also receive advice and support in understanding their rights, responsibilities and obligations as owners of small and medium size businesses.

The Inland Revenue Department is charged with administering the tax laws of the Federation in an efficient and equitable manner, to promote voluntary compliance to maximize Revenue for the development of the Federation at the least cost to the public and in a manner that warrants the highest degree of Public confidence in our integrity, efficiency and fairness. The Inland Revenue Department is the prime revenue collections agency for the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis within the Ministry of Finance, located at Bay Road, Basseterre, and Charlestown, St. Kitts and Nevis, West Indies.
