Local Youth to benefit from Music Development Workshop

HonRichardSkerrittHeadshotE(ZIZ)– Local artists, agents, producers and music lovers stand to benefit from a Music Development Workshop to be held by the Department of Culture on Friday 27th June 2014.

International rock and jazz artists Paul Peress, Bill Champlin, and Bobby Kimball, performers of this year’s St. Kitts Music Festival will be facilitators for this year’s workshop.

Topics to be discussed include, sound engineering, instrumentation, intellectual property rights, marketing and publication.

At a Media and Sponsors Breakfast held on Wednesday morning, Tourism Minister the Hon. Richard Skerritt said that the workshop is in line with the objectives of the St. Kitts Music Festival.

“Another one of our major objectives that I was involved in enshrining in the St. Kitts Music Festival incorporates the development of our music through training of our young people and so musicians who are contracted to the Music Festival have an obligation to participate when requested to do so with other experts in the music industry who were asked to give back by conducting training workshops in a number of music disciplines,” he said.

Member of the management committee, Adrian Lam, said that the committee hopes that local artists will be able to improve their skills through the workshop.

“The training that goes on, if you look at the programme for the workshop… it’s how to publish your music, copyrighting,…we using those areas of expertise so that we can present it to the local music community and they can then take that information to improve their skills,” he said.

Regional and international artists for the Music Festival are bound by contract to work alongside the local acts via the Music Development Workshop.

Persons seeking to benefit from this year’s workshop must register via the Tourism Ministry at telephone number 465-1999.
