Ministry of Education Continues to Provide Safety Equipment

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 1st, 2013 (SKNIS): As part of the ongoing school safety project, the Ministry of Education handed over emergency equipment to the Tyrell Williams Primary, Charles E. Mills Secondary and Verchilds High on Tuesday (April 30).

The project entitled “School Safety and Disaster Mitigation in Public Schools in the Federation” was initiated by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with UNESCO. It is geared toward training education officials for emergencies and providing safety equipment to schools in the Federation.

Education Officer Michael Blake, who has been instrumental in the project, explained that like the heads of the school, the Ministry of Education is concerned about the safety of the students.

Deputy Principal Lester Richards of Charles E. Mills Secondary expressed his gratitude to the Ministry and noted that disaster preparedness is important to the school.

The completed Ministry of Education St. Kitts and Nevis Safety Programme Manual was also presented to the schools. It covers areas such as earthquake, tsunami and volcanic eruption preparedness.

Safety items donated included first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and megaphones.
