Nevis Economy in upward Spin, says St. Kitts-Nevis Attorney General

Charlestown, Nevis — (Thursday, June 2nd, 2011) St. Kitts-Nevis Attorney General, Hon. Patrice Nisbett told Nevisians in Leeds, England that the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP)-led Nevis Island Administration (NIA )continued to be a good steward of the island’s economy in rough and stormy times. He made the statement on Sunday during a Town Hall meeting hosted by the Administration at the West Indian Centre in Chapeltown.

“The NRP, ladies and Gentlemen have been good stewards of the resources it inherited and has been able to adopt a clear strategy that kept the country safe and stable in unchartered waters,

“Nevis Housing and Land Development Cooperation (NHLDC) became important in an economic model that ensured stability. Cherry Gardens, a Government housing project provided honest construction work for unemployed men. The Government partnered with Brown Hill Communications so that it was opened to provide employment,especially for women laid off from the Four Seasons. We were able by initiatives implemented by the Government to weather the economic storm,”commented Mr. Nisbett.

The Attorney General, who hails from the Parish of St. James in Nevis, also referred to the consequences that came along with the closure of the Four Seasons Resort but used the opportunity to give credit to Premier of Nevi, the Hon, Joseph Parry who ensured that the hotel was reopened. Mr. Nisbett said,”Mr. Parry had delivered!”

“He was able as a good steward of time and resources to successfully negotiate and now the Luxury Liner [Four Seasons Resort] is sailing the high seas again. Seven hundred families are actively employed at the Four Seasons. You can well imagine the spin off in the economy of those new and reclaimed jobs,” he said.

In addition, Mr.Nisbett pointed to the resumption of American Eagle flights into Nevis which is expected to increase over time complemented with the new direct service by British Airways from Gatwick, American Airlines from New York and Miami, US Air from North Carolina and Delta from Atlanta to St. Kitts.

He told those present that the economic fundamentals on Nevis were strong and therefore attracted investors.

“People are investing in Nevis again. A brand new Value Mart is near completion at the entrance of the road to Long Point. There is confidence in the Government.

“Statistics show for 2009 that 212 new businesses were created in Nevis that year and in 2010,135 new businesses were added. These statistics indicate that the economy is on an upward swing,” he said.

The Town Hall style meeting was attended by a number of Nevisians and at the end they were given the opportunity to field questions.
