OECS Ministers gather in St. Kitts for meeting on sub-region’s agriculture sector

OECS Ministers

Agriculture ministers and officials are currently meeting in St Kitts for the OECS ministers of agriculture meeting held at the Marriott hotel.

With greater emphasis being placed on the agricultural sector not only in St Kitts but throughout the region, OECS ministers are seeking ways to take the industry even further.

According to the Senior Director for the OECS, Mr. Randolph Cato over the past decade agriculture production in the region has noticeably declined.

However, with this meeting, the ministers are looking to reposition the industry at the position it once held.

Senior Minister and Minister of Agriculture, Hon Dr Timothy Harris delivered the feature address at the meeting. He says the region is in a good position to use the effects of the global recession as a building block for the sector.

Minister Harris also used the opportunity to commend farmers and fishers for withstanding numerous challenges to keep the sector alive.

The two-day meeting continues tomorrow where discussions on issues relating to design, implementation and funding of the OECS agriculture priorities programme and decisions on the way forward on agriculture-tourism linkages in the OECS will be held.
