OECS Regional Assembly for Antigua postponed

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JUNE 6TH 2012 (CUOPM) – The St. Lucia-based Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Secretariat has announced the postponement of the inaugural session of the Regional Assembly originally scheduled for Antigua on June 15.

In a statement, the Secretariat said the leaders of Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts-Nevis, Montserrat, Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands, met via video conference to discuss the matter.

“The inauguration of the OECS Assembly is of tremendous historical significance to the OECS Community. Heads of Government are of the view that preparations across the OECS Economic Union will benefit from additional time to ensure that all arrangements are put in place so that the inauguration of this vital organ is accorded the place of distinction which it will command in the history of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States,” the Secretariat said in a statement.

It said that a new date will be announced following the meeting of OECS leaders in St. Vincent June 10-13.

The revised Treaty of Basseterre of 2010, which governs the OECS move towards an Economic Union, outlines provisions for the establishment of the OECS Assembly as one of the five principles of the sub-regional grouping.
