Peace Corp Open Day to take place in St Kitts

ZIZ News…February 26, 2010 – An open day to celebrate the 49th anniversary of the United States Peace Corp will be taking place this coming Monday 1st March 2010 at Independent Square in St Kitts. The event will take place between 10am to 5pm.

The Peace Corp traces its roots and mission back to the early 1960’s when the Senator John F. Kennedy, before he became the US President, challenged US students to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries.

Geoffrey Matranga is a US Peace Corp volunteer who is based in St Kitts, and he is also the Chairperson of the Volunteer Advisory Council. Mr Matranga informed ZIZ News of Monday’s event and also outlined the three goals of the Peace Corp:

“The first goal of the Peace Corp is to bring trained men and women to countries that request them, and we are the trained men and women. Our second goal is to teach more about America and the American culture to the people we visit. The third goal is to teach Americans about the culture and the people from the variety of countries that we go to.”

Mr Matranga also explained that as part of the open day people will be able to find out more about the Peace Corp and also to receive a free blood pressure check.
