People of ROC (Taiwan) Donate Wheelchairs to Hospital

(ZIZ News) – It is no secret that the Government of the Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan has made numerous donations to St. Kitts and Nevis, particularly in the area of health. Now, the people of the ROC are following suit.

On Tuesday morning, a donation was made in the form of 30 wheelchairs; 20 to St. Kitts and 10 to Nevis, by Hung Ching-Chung- Mike Hung Products and Company Limited.

Resident Ambassador, George Gow Wei Chiou said the donation stems from a partnership that had been cultivated over the years.

“It does not come from the Government or Taiwan, but it comes from the people of Taiwan. This is not a unique example because the cooperation between Taiwan and St. Kitts and Nevis is not just between governments, but also between the people,” he explained.

According to Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health Andrew Skerritt, the wheelchairs were received at an opportune time as the Federation is celebrating older persons. He said the chairs would be distributed to healthcare institutions around the island to assist in the care of the elderly.

“It is therefore fitting that these wheelchairs will be distributed at community based health services- to health centres, at institutional based health services. It is also fitting that we hand over some of these chairs to Social Services to assist with the care of our senior citizens,” adding that “It is said that the manner in which a country treats its seniors is indicative of its values. This is why we are happy to ensure that our senior citizens will also benefit from this donation.”

Meanwhile, Minister of Health, Hon. Eugene Hamilton thanked Mike Hung Products and Company Limited for the generous donation. He described it as timely.

“It is really indeed a great pleasure for this Government to accept from the people of Taiwan and these go beyond the Government. These are people who are working even in the Diaspora who feel it is an important thing to make a contribution to this nation and we are thankful that they remembered us at this time,” he said.

The Republic of China on Taiwan has donated to the development of health in the Federation through the donation of ambulances for the advancement of emergency services. The ROC also aided in setting up the Intensive Care Unit.
