Photography Competitions launched at British High Commission

British High Commission, Bridgetown…June 20 2012 — Ronnie Carrington, doyen of Barbados’ photographic community, launched the Arts in Motion photography competitions at a ceremony at the British High Commission in Bridgetown last week. He commented that it was the goal of Arts in Motion “to bridge the gap between the world of the arts and the world of business, and to assist people in making a profit from their photographic passion.”

Picture Barbados and Caribbean Mirror were the two competitions launched, one to celebrate what is Bajan and the other to encourage photographers all around the Eastern Caribbean and further afield to use their cameras to tell stories. The competitions are another aspect of the Summer Arts Festival, held recently at the Hastings Rocks, Christ Church, Barbados.

Host sponsor, Acting High Commissioner Phil Culligan, noted that the British High Commission was inspired by the London 2012 Olympic Games and the UK’s interest in climate change to support prizes for the categories Our Natural Environment and Climate Change and Healthy Living Inspiration through Sport. With only 42 days to go to the opening of the London Olympic Games the UK is looking forward to welcoming the world to London.

Other sponsors present were SOL Caribbean and Photo Finish. Prize monies total more than $30,000 and the competitions will run through August to allow further entries inspired by carnival and other events in Barbados and throughout the region.
