PM Douglas announces independence anniversary theme, activities

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, SEPTEMBER 8TH 2010 (CUOPM) – “Strengthening families for positive nation building” is the theme for the 27th Anniversary of the Independence of St. Kitts and Nevis, Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas has disclosed.

“I believe this theme is important as it calls for the family to be concentrated on all that it means and all that it engenders and I ask our people to think positively in this way for our future,” said Dr. Douglas as he announced several of the activities planned to mark the independence anniversary at the end of his weekly radio programme “Ask the Prime Minister.”

Prime Minister Douglas will lead his Cabinet Ministers on the visit to high schools on Tuesday 14th September. This will be followed at 8 P.M. with the Prime Minister’s Lecture Series at the Old Basseterre Boy’s School.

Wednesday 15th September is the Cultural Gala Night outside the National Museum at 7:30 P.M.

Activities on National Heroes Day – September 16th – a public holiday includes the announcement of National Honours Awards; Community Flag Raising Ceremonies at 8 A.M.; The Laying of Wreath and Guard of Honour at the Robert L. Bradshaw Community Park, St. Paul’s at 9 A.M. to be followed by the 2010 Independence Family Awards at 5 P.M.

The Independence Fun Run starts at 10 A.M. on Saturday 18th September. The Prime Minister’s 2010 Independence Family Concert featuring Pianist Regina Shamvilli is scheduled for that evening.

Sunday September 19th (Independence Day) has been designated a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving and events include the Annual Embassy of Venezuela 10K Marathon at 10 A.M. and the State Service at the Co-Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, East Independence Square Street at 6 P.M.

Activities on Monday 20th September (Public Holiday) include the Independence Ceremonial Parade at Warner Park Cricket Stadium at 8 A.M.; the Mother’s Union Breakfast at the Old Basseterre Girl’s School at 8 A.M. and the Governor General’s Reception at Government House.

Saturday September 25th will see the staging of the Independence Anniversary Brimstone Hill Run for the Fit & Fearless at 7.30 AM.

The curtain comes down on the 2010 Independence Anniversary celebrations with the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force Band Recital at Brimstone Hill Fortress at 5 P.M. on Sunday September 26th.
