PM Douglas expresses sadness at passing of Sir Fred Phillips

ST. KITTS, FEBRUARY 21ST 2011 (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas Monday expressed “sadness” at the passing Sunday night of former Governor of St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla, Sir Fred Phillips.

Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Mr. Erasmus Williams said Prime Minister Douglas was informed by telephone Monday morning of Sir Fred’s passing by his wife, Lady Phillips. Sir Fred died in Antigua Sunday night.

Mr. Williams said Prime Minister Douglas expressed his “deep sadness and personal loss and sincere condolences” to Lady Phillips.

He said Prime Minister Douglas is to issue a full statement later Monday.

Sir Fred became the first black Governor of what was then St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla on the attainment of Statehood on February 27th 1967 and served until 1969. He had served earlier as Administrator until February 27th 1967 when he succeeded Henry Howard.
