PM Harris expresses condolences to Taiwan’s President Tsai on the passing of her mother

St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, has expressed sincere condolences to President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Her Excellency Dr. Tsai Ing-Wen on the passing of her mother, Chang Chin-feng, at the age of 93.

In a letter to President Tsai, dated March 4, 2018, Prime Minister Harris wrote: “There are few other losses as great as that of a mother; thus, I offer my support at this undoubtedly challenging time. I pray that fond memories of her will linger vividly in your mind and assist in alleviating your grief.”

Dr. Harris continued by stating, “Although I did not have the pleasure of meeting her, I surmise, though she led a simple and low-key life, that she was a stellar role model and pillar of support, instilling in you the values you exhibit today. She must have been a proud mother as she witnessed your rise as the first woman to the highest office in your country.”

Prime Minister Harris told President Tsai, whom he held bilateral discussions with in June of 2017 that while pressing matters of State will compete for her attention even at this trying moment, “it is my hope that you will have ample time to cherish and celebrate the life of your beloved mother.”

Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris’ letter ended by saying, “In availing myself of this opportunity to wish you peace and strength at this most difficult time, I renew to you the assurances of my highest consideration and ask that you please pass these sentiments on to your family and your people.”

The Governments of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Republic of China (Taiwan) have enjoyed years of strong and mutual bilateral relations since the official formalization of diplomatic ties in 1983.
