Prime Minister Douglas congratulates new Trinidad and Tobago leader

ST. KITTS, MAY 28TH 2010 (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis has joined regional and world leaders in congratulating Trinidad and Tobago’s the Hon. Kamla Persad-Bissessar on her Party’s victory at the polls and her assumption of the Office of Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

“St. Kitts and Nevis joins in welcoming you as one of the newly elected leaders of the region. However, I have no doubt that the new Government of Trinidad and Tobago under your leadership will sustain its contribution to the improved profile of the Caribbean Community as a region which is demonstrating the capacity to make a significant contribution to global dialogue, as your distinguished predecessor,” said Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas in his congratulatory message.

He added: “Though our responsibilities are becoming increasingly demanding, I have no doubt that you are cognizant of the role that your country must continue to play in promoting a multilateral approach to confront the present challenges posed by the unprecedented developments of global proportions to which we are susceptible.”

Prime Minister Douglas noted that St. Kitts and Nevis and Trinidad and Tobago have long enjoyed close ties and cooperation on issues of shared interests.

“My Government anticipates that the goodwill and close partnership will also be the hallmark of your Administration as we strive together to fortify the bridge of national unity as a principal prerequisite to foreign policy coordination,” the St. Kitts and Nevis leader told the 58-year-old attorney and first woman prime minister of the twin-island Republic.
