Pushing Fashion Forward in St Kitts and Nevis

(ZIZ)A local fashion designer says the country has not recognized the potential earning power of the fashion industry.

Judith Rawlins says fashion designing can be more than just something done in the spare time.

“People think of the fashion industry as something on the side but we have to remember that the fashion industry is a multi-billion dollar industry worldwide and we have not tapped into it…we have not even begun to see fashion as an industry in St. Kitts,” she told ZIZ News.

She says the first step is boosting sewing, design and other related classes in schools.

“I think it has to be incubated in that there needs to be probably a project…where people can actually hone their skills in fashion; seize the opportunities; find employment and what would give them the skills needed to actually push this industry forward,” Rawlins said.

Rawlins will be showcasing her newest designs at a fashion show on Sunday at the St Kitts Marriott Resort’s Grand Ballroom.
