Self Care behaviors important to elderly

MentalHealthFilePhotoA(ZIZ) The Director of Counseling in the Ministry of Social Services Michelle De Lacoudray Blake has underscore the importance of self care behaviours in promoting mental wellness in the elderly.

The Counseling Director says having meaningful experiences and feeling apart of the communities in which they live have a hugh impact on their mental state.

Blake also said that more often seniors are living in isolation. Instead she says they should be socializing, volunteering and reaching out to others in the community, as well as, practicing other positive self care behaviors.

The Social Services Counselor spoke to ZIZ News as St. Kitts along with the rest of the world celebrated world mental health day yesterday Thursday 10th October, 2013.

The World Health Organization has designated the 10th of October each year for the celebration. This year with the support of the world federation for Mental Health, the day focused on mental health and older people.
