St. Kitts Nevis Defence Force Band Youth Development Programme

ZIZ News…March 17 2011 – The St. Kitts Nevis Defence Force through its Military Band has commenced another beginner’s programme for Youths of the Federation, in Woodwind and Brass Instruments, as well as percussion mainly drums. The focus of the youth programme is multi faceted; embracing the theme “Fostering better youths in a disciplined Society”.

Practice sessions held on Tuesdays and Thursdays for Woodwind and Brass Instruments and for the Cadet Community Drums Corps on Tuesdays. All sessions are held at the St. Kitts Nevis Defence Force Headquarters, Camp Springfield, Basseterre commencing at 1700 hours (5.00 p.m.).

The programme presently has enrolled approximately one hundred (100) persons tutored by Senior and Junior Instructors of the St. Kitts Nevis Defence Force Band. Through this programme, it is hoped that the participants would develop a further love for music and learn to proficiently play an instrument. It also caters to at risk youths who can be meaningfully engaged in positive activities after school which would also enhance their social skills and further help to develop their civic mindedness and useful core values in life. The Youth programme provides the resources for the continued development of The St. Kitts Nevis Defence Force Band and keeps alive the rich musical tradition in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

The programme is open to youths of the Federation with a desire to advance a career in music, however to be successful one needs to be well disciplined and have a positive attitude. Persons wishing to become a part of the classes or offer support for this programme may contact the St. Kitts Nevis Defence Force at Camp Springfield, Basseterre.
