St Kitts-Nevis to Attend PROCCER Training

(ZIZ)–Six representatives from St Kitts and Nevis will be taking part in a Training and Certification Program for Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention (PROCCER) next week.

The training session, organized by the OAS’s Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD), will provide the participants with training and institutional capacity building in the prevention of drug abuse and violence and drug treatment methods.

Director for the National Council on Drug Abuse Prevention, Karimu Byron says they will be covering five modules during the training.

She says, “The first one is understanding the basic ethics and standards of developing prevention programs and the same for treatment as well. It also covers from the assessments to the different models that are already in place; different evidence based models that are being used, right down to the evaluation of the program to ensure the effectiveness of the program.”

She explained one of the ways St Kitts and Nevis will benefit directly from this training.

“We will return and train individuals locally who are trying to develop a drug prevention program or who have already started a drug prevention program or treatment program. So we will be responsible for training those individuals on the basic standards, knowledge and competencies of what it takes to develop and sustain these programs and treatment services.”

OAS Representative for St Kitts and Nevis, Starret Greene said it is critically important to have certified individuals in the country that can respond to the current drug problem.

He said, “This is the perfect example of how the OAS continues to build human resource capacity in member countries and I think it is critical because we believe not only in training individuals but certifying them so that they can be recognized in our region as true experts and outside of the region as well.”

The Training and Certification Program for Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention (PROCCER) runs from Monday, February 17 to Friday, February 21 in Miami.
