Tennis closes regular season with win on Senior Day

AMHERST, Mass. – The UMass tennis team closed its 2013-14 regular season schedule with a 6-1 win over Rhode Island on Senior Day. The squad blanked the Rams in doubles play and took five-of-six singles matches on the afternoon at the Mullins Center Courts. The Minutewomen capped off the year 11-8 overall and 3-1 in conference play while the Rams dropped to 10-6 overall and 0-3 in the A-10 conference.

UMass opened the match with a sweep in doubles play. Aarzoo Malik and Arielle Griffin started off the Minutewomen with an 8-0 No. 2 win quickly followed by an 8-3 No. 3 win from Yuliana Motyl and Anna Woosley. Sonia Bokhari and Chanel Glasper rounded out the doubles pairs with a 5-2 unfinished match in the No. 1 spot.

Motyl continued UMass’ winning fashion, taking the No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-7 (12-10). The Rams returned with a win of their own in No. 2 singles from freshman Talyor Holden. Holden held off Bokhari in a three-set battle, dropping the first set 2-6, then answering with a 6-2 second-set victory before taking the tiebreaker 10-8.

Malik, Griffin, Woosley and Podlofsky sealed the win in the remaining singles matches, all with straight set victories in the No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 spot, respectively.

The Minutewomen now set their sights on the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio with matches beginning Thursday, April 24.
