Tropical Storm Isaac getting better organized

A tropical storm warning is in effect for St Kitts and Nevis. A tropical storm warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected within the specified area in this case within 12-24 hours. Residents should seek to complete storm preparation by 12 noon today.

At 8 am the centre of Tropical Storm Isaac was located near latitude 15.7 north, longitude 58.4 west or about 265 miles ESE of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Isaac is moving toward the West at 19 miles per hour. This general motion is expected to continue during the next 24 hours.

Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph with higher gusts. Strengthening is forecast during the next 48hrs and Isaac could become a hurricane by Thursday.

Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 1004 mb.

Based on the latest information, Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to pass approximately 60 miles to the south of St. Kitts and Nevis later this evening with winds of 35-45 mph with higher gust; however, it is critical to note that should Isaac strengthen greater than what is currently anticipated greater effects will be felt over the islands. Residents therefore are strongly advised to monitor its progress closely.

Rainfall totals of up to 5 inches are forecasted. With this type of rainfall, residents in low lying and flood prone areas should move to higher ground and residents near slopes should guard against mud-slides. A flash flood watch is now in effect.

Seas will deteriorate during today with increasing swells reaching between 8-12ft by tonight and warning for sea bathers and small craft operators are now in effect. Sea bathers are advised to avoid the waters while small craft operators should remain in port.

All residents are urged to monitor the movement of Isaac closely and act to protect life and property.
