Vanessa Williams continues to make a name for her-self

Running-1Sports Page — Local Nevisian female long distance athlete, Vanessa Williams, continues to make a name for her-self.

Following hot on the heels of a top performance in the Independence run over in St.Kitts, Vanessa was the first female to touch the tape in the Independence marathon held in Nevis on Saturday 20th September.

But that was not all, Vanessa gave all of the men competing a ‘run for their money’ as she placed second overall in the marathon, just about 27 minutes shy of overall first place, Arthur Hossington of Antigua.

The race meet was spread over two days with the 5K run held on Thursday 18th September and involved a section of the Four Seasons golf course.

Saturday’s half marathon event was a more grueling exercise and saw the athletes running from Charlestown, along the main road, with a turnaround point in the vicinity of the Vance Amory International Airport and back along the main road and climaxing in Charlestown.

The marathon was even more testing with the athletes running a similar course to the half marathon, except for the fact that their turnaround point was in Zion village.

Chief coordinator Greg Phillip who is the CEO at the Nevis Tourism Authority, deemed the meet a success but noted that there were areas which required improvement and vowed that those areas will be rectified for next year.

Participants ranged from regional and international athletes and there was also a fair sized local representation with athletes from St.Kitts and Nevis.

Team Antigua performed especially well and copped some of the top places in the event.
