Zero tolerance to crime and violence is paramount, says PM Douglas

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, NOVEMBER 22ND 2011 (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas says zero tolerance to crime and violence ensuring the safety and security of the people of the twin-island Federation is paramount.

“We as a government cannot do it alone; we do not think that we can do it alone. The police cannot do it alone; the Defence Force cannot do it alone. It takes partnership. Partnership between the government and the people, partnership between the government and our own citizens and our investors of the business community, partnership between the police and the community, partnership among each and every single one of us in this paradise country – St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Prime Minister Douglas, at a ceremony to hand over a vehicle to the Police by the Port Zante Business Community at Port Zante early Monday evening.

Dr. Douglas, who has responsibility for the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, said to prevent the escalation of crime, it has become necessary for us as a people, as a government, to ensure that there is a single common policy with regard to crime and violence, ensuring that safety and security is paramount to protect the citizens of the country, the residents of the country, the investors and those who visit from time to time.

He also used the opportunity commend those who have been stepping forward in recent times to continue to demonstrate in a very significant way that it is only for partnership and cooperation that “we can really realise our goals and potential as a people and as a country and move this great country forward.”

He referred to vehicles donated over the last few months by the Coalition of Support for St. Kitts and Nevis Security Initiatives (CSSKNSI), the Customs and Excise Department and TDC.

“Today I have another opportunity to embrace another group of investors and businessmen from Port Zante led by Sunil Gehani the owner/manager of the Twist Bar and Grill.

“We cannot do alone, but we can do it together for the benefit of our people, the benefit of our visitors, the benefit of our residents, and those who are investing among us,” reiterated Prime Minister Douglas before receiving the keys on behalf of the Government and the People of St. Kitts and Nevis.
