Agriculture Open Day: A Feast of Flavor, Fun, and Future-Proof Farming

BASSETERRE: The curtains fell on the 30th Agriculture Open Day and Marine Expo yesterday at Basseterre Valley Grounds, capping two days of non-stop energy that blended mouthwatering local eats with cutting-edge agri-talks during the 19th Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA 2025). Hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources (MoAFMR), the event—running October 2-3 under the theme “Sowing Change, Harvesting Resilience.”

Minister Hon. Samal Duggins kicked off the festivities on Thursday, dubbing it “a milestone celebration of our farmers, fishers, agro-processors, and creative entrepreneurs.” He spotlighted the CWA synergy:

“This year’s event is especially significant… giving St. Kitts and Nevis the perfect stage to showcase our innovation, resilience, and the very best of our agriculture ‘from soil to sea.’”

Over 60 stalls overflowed with treasures with tangy sea moss jellies, golden Nevis honey drizzled over fresh breadfruit, and crisp hydroponic greens grown in vertical farms—proof that small-plot tech can yield more without guzzling water.

Duggins wrapped with gratitude: “To all who have worked tirelessly… I extend heartfelt thanks. Together, we are writing a new chapter of sustainability, food security, and pride in our local industries.”

Early tallies show a 15% vendor uptick from last year, with agro-entrepreneurs like sea moss maven Akiesha Fergus netting orders from OECS buyers — hinting at export booms that could plug import leaks.
