An Appeal to Keep Beaches Clean this Holiday Weekend

Workers cleaning up Cockleshell Bay

ZIZ NEWSROOM, BASSETERRE, JUNE 10, 2011 – While you may be making plans to go to the beach this holiday weekend, the Tourism Authority is asking everyone to keep the beaches clean.

The Authority launched a clean up operation last weekend at Cockleshell Bay.

Goldha franks of the tourism authority said beaches are a valuable asset and need to be kept clean.

“You know usually people travel to the beaches more frequently during holiday weekends with their families, and have picnics and we want to sensitize the public about keeping the beaches clean since the next day a ship will be in port. So we’ll have visitors coming in and you don’t want our visitors to come and see a dirty beach,” she said

She says there are little things everyone can do to keep the beaches clean.

“Walk with your trash bins when you’re having your picnics. Instead of disposing of garbage on the beach, you can put it in the bins and carry them with you until you find a larger garbage bin to dispose of your waste, instead of leaving it on the beach,” she said.

Whit Monday, which falls on June 13 this year, is usually one of the more popular days for visits to the beach.
