Antigua Completes Construction of Solar Farm

The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has completed construction of a 3 MW Solar Photovoltaic Farm meant to reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels, the Caribbean Community announced Tuesday.

CARICOM said on its website that the solar plant is part of a larger 10 MW renewable energy initiative that will supply electricity to the airport, a hospital and government offices.

The new plant will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and electricity costs, Tourism and Economic Development Minister Asot Michael said.

In February, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda approved the Renewable Energy Act, part of a wider effort by the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States to “update the regulatory structures for energy within the sub-region”.
