Capisterre Fishers Get New Ice Machine

DIEPPE BAY: Agriculture Minister The Hon. Samal Duggins commissioned a new ice machine for the Capisterre Fishermen’s Marketing and Supplies Co-operative Society at Dieppe Bay Beach last Sunday, marking a significant investment for rural fishing.

The initiative emerged from collaboration between local co-operatives, government ministries, and the Caribbean Feminist Climate and Justice Movement, signaling a multi-stakeholder approach to fisheries development.

Minister Duggins emphasized the equipment’s broader impact, stating: “This initiative represents more than equipment, its progress, empowerment, and partnership in action.”

The ice machine will enable fishers to better preserve their catch, directly improving product quality and increasing income potential. The installation also serves as preparation for a larger Fisheries Complex planned for the Capisterre region.

“This investment will help our fishers preserve their catch, increase quality and income, and prepare for the upcoming Fisheries Complex, another major step forward for the Capisterre region,” Minister Duggins noted.

The project aligns with national goals around food security and coastal community resilience. By providing essential cold storage infrastructure, the government aims to strengthen the sustainability of local fisheries operations.

The Dieppe Bay location holds historical significance for the community, making it a fitting site for this development initiative. The upcoming Fisheries Complex is expected to further transform fishing operations in Capisterre, building on this foundation of improved infrastructure and support services.
