Chevening Scholarship Applications Now Open

Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 4th , 2020 (ZIZ News): The St. Kitts and Nevis Chevening Alumni Association is inviting interested persons to apply for the Chevening Scholarship Programme.

The Chevening Scholarship programme offers students with leadership abilities the opportunity to undertake any postgraduate study or courses at universities in the United Kingdom.

It covers tuition, airfare, a monthly stipend and provides other opportunities for professional development.

Leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Chevening Alumni Association, Sonia Boddie-Thompson explained the application process.

“To qualify for a Chevening scholarship you must have a bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years [work] experience but as you complete your application you would be required to write 4 essays of no more than 500 words and these essays focus on leadership so you demonstrate your leadership skills and abilities and how you’ve helped to influence other persons to achieve goals. The other essay focus on networking how you’re able to build meaningful relationships, there’s also an essay on career goals in terms of what you plan to do after the Chevening scholarship once you’ve acquired that postgraduate education and you also have to place emphasis while writing your fourth essay on why you’ve chosen that area of study and why do you want to go to that particular university that you have chosen and while applying you have to identify at least 3 universities that you would like to pursue your area of study at.”

She said applicants would not have to go through this process alone the alumni will assist with the application preparation.

“Since the official formation of our group in 2014 we’ve taken this role even more seriously and we’ve decided that we are going to directly put it out there that we are offering assistance. Persons in the past they would come and they would ask us but now we’re saying as an organization we are here to provide that application support that you need so we are here and we are eager and excited and anxious to assist persons with their application so we can provide tips as to how you can make you scholarship application more competitive and we are also offering to review your scholarship application so that when we look at it and when you’re finished you feel like I’ve submitted something very solid and if you advance to the interview stage we’re also providing interview preparation sessions as well.”

She mentioned some notable persons from the federation who have used the scholarship to advance their career and contributed to nation building.

“We are proud of the members of our alumni association here in St. Kitts and Nevis, we have a member of parliament in Nevis who’s also a member of our Chevening alumni group, we have the previous director of public works in Nevis who is now the Director of Planning on Nevis, he’s a member of our group, the Registrar of Intellectual Property in St. Kitts and Nevis is a member of Chevening group, we have one of the senior engineers at the SKELEC department he’s a member of our group he would have done a Master’s in Power Plant Engineering, the Executive Director of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce…we have another member who is in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we have another member who is an architect , we have quite a few lawyers, we have educators so our Chevening group we have a diversity in the skillsets and the educational backgrounds that we come from so we are certainly equipped and ready to assist anyone who is interested irrespective of the field of study you’re interested in.”
