CIC Concerned Over Recent Murders

(ZIZ News)– The St. Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce is concerned about the murders and gun-related crimes which have plagued the nation recently.

In an interview with ZIZ News, Executive Director of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Calvin Cable said it is important for the Chamber to address the issue of crime as it poses a threat to the country’s economic development.

“Crime is one of the facets which tend to discourage economic development. If our destination, as a tourism destination, becomes known as being unsafe, we would then suffer the consequences of reduced visitors, both stay over and cruise ship alike, and I don’t think there is anyone in our society who would want to see this,” Cable explained.

He added that the members of the Chamber are encouraging persons to help curb the occurrence of crime on the island.

“The members, large and small, are appealing to civil society to do whatever could be done to reduce the incidence of crime because it is not the police who are responsible for crime, it is civil society and so we are asking all those who may be engaged in crime to reconsider the situation, reconsider the consequences for individuals and for the country as a whole,” Cable added.

The Chamber also encourages the use of the police website www.sknpolice.com and the Crime Stoppers hotline in aiding in the reduction of crime, he concluded.
