Continued training to ensure full Ebola preparation

(ZIZ News) — The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis continues to prepare for any cases of Ebola in the region.

Health Minister, the Hon. Marcella Liburd said during Friday’s National Assembly sitting that her Ministry is training health workers who are on the front line as they are the most vulnerable.

“We have therefore engaged, since August and continue to be engaged, in training our healthcare workers at all levels,” she said, adding that “The Ministry now has a draft of the St. Kitts-Nevis Ebola Procedure Manual and a Management of Ebola Disease draft which is a plan by the Community Health based services, both working together to help to train our health workers with the procedures.”

The Health Minister is of the view that educating the nation’s citizens about Ebola is a critical preventive technique.

She said, “To fight this disease, we must engage in public education of our populace. In that regard, a communication strategy has been put in place including radio and television appearances, information on the social media, leaflets and town halls.”

“There has been much scaremongering, politics and sensationalism. We will arm our people with knowledge as knowledge is a key ingredient in the fight against this disease,” Minister Liburd added.

A travel ban, improved security at the nation’s ports, and the outfitting of an Ebola quarantine and treatment room at the airport are among the initiatives of the Ministry of Health has implemented to prevent an Ebola outbreak, should it occur in the Federation.
