Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 26, 2019 (ZIZ News): November 25 marked the beginning of Sixteen Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence – an observance spearheaded by the Gender Affairs Department of the Ministry of Community Development, Gender Affairs & Social Services.
The annual 16-day Campaign, which is a worldwide observance ends on December 10th and aims to raise awareness of gender-based harm and to advocate for its elimination.
Senior Gender Officer, Shinnel Charles, explained that gender-based violence is a matter of serious concern in the Federation and around the world.
She reported that one hundred and fifty-seven cases of domestic violence were reported locally in 2016, particularly against women.
She reminded that there are several forms of gender based violence. These can be “domestic violence, gang violence, harassment, violence against children, sexual violence”.
Several activities will be held during the 16-day Campaign. These include, a Panel Discussion on ZIZ during the radio program“Working for You” on Wednesday, November 27, a “Youth for Human Rights” March from Greenland’s on Friday November 29, Media appearances on December 4, Wear Purple Day on Friday December 6, Human Rights Day/T-Shirt Day on December 10.
Miss Charles said among these activities planned, an Open Forum on “Domestic Violence and Religion” is one of the major highlights.
The Pastors’ Panel Discussion/Open Forum on “Domestic Violence and Religion” will be held on Tuesday, December 3rd from 6:00 pm in the Anglican Church Hall.
The 16-day Campaign is being observed under the theme, “Love Echoes Loud”.
