Energy Month Essay Competition

Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 21st , 2020 (ZIZ News): High school students between the ages of 15 to 17 are being invited to participate in the CARICOM Energy Month Essay Competition which is being facilitated by the Ministry of Public Infrastructure Post And Urban Development.

Energy Month in the federation will be observed in November of this year.

Communications Officer in the Ministry Che-Raina Warner spoke of how the essay competition came about.

“As we prepare for Energy Month 2020, one of the things we considered was the fact that we are operating the terms and conditions of Covid19 and… we had to be very cautious about the types of events we are hosting but of course we still wanted the involvement of our students and so one of the things we thought we could do with limited interaction was to host events or competitions such as an art contest and an essay contest. The art contest has been completed, we actually have a winner already, you would hear about that later on, but at this moment we are currently running the essay competition which is geared toward students in the high school level, age 15 to 17.”

The competition which is already open, is guided the theme for Energy Month “RE-silient Community- Energy at the Center”.

Ms. Warner said there are many positives to be recognised by participants in the competition.

“It’s really a competition that I would encourage students to participate in.Its an opportunity for them to build their research and analytical skills, as well as to become exposed to content around energy, energy efficiency, energy conservation and all of those things and having done their research they are not only able to better educate themselves but their peers.”

There will be three awards presented to successful participants.

“In terms of the prizes, they are very catchy. In the first place you will receive a $700 valued tablet. Second place winner will receive $350 and third place will receive $200 cash prizes.”

Persons interested in participating in the competition can collect registration forms from the secretariat at the Ministry of Public Infrastructure which is located on the second floor of the Water Services Department Building on Wellington Road. Essays can be returned to the secretariat or they can be emailed to pwutp@yahoo.com.
