Fire Services Investigate Arson In Douglas Estate St. Peters

Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 23rd, 2020 (ZIZ News): The St. Kitts Nevis Fire and Rescue Services is investigating what is suspected to be a fire that was intentionally set Tuesday morning.

According to Chief Fire Officer Everette O’Garro the fire services responded to a fire in the Douglas Estate area of St. Peters, behind the airport at approximately 10:15am.

Upon arrival the fire officers found the fire had spread over approximately 30 acres of land.

Chief O’garro said the responding crews from the Basseterre and Sandy Point Fire Stations worked throughout the morning into the afternoon, monitoring the high risk area to ensure the containment of the fire, in efforts to reduce the risk of damage to property.

Chief O’garro used the opportunity to encourage persons living in areas that are prone to bush fires to invest in a fire break which is a clearing of land up to 25 feet around a property to act as a barrier to reduce the risk of the spread of fire and damage to property.

Investigations into the suspected arson are ongoing.
