Flash Flood Watch Issued for St. Kitts

BASSETERRE: The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the St. Kitts Meteorological Office have issued a Flash Flood Watch for low-lying and flood-prone areas across St. Kitts and Nevis, remaining in effect until 4 p.m. today, Thursday, October 16th, 2025.

A persistent trough positioned over the northeast Caribbean continues to influence local weather patterns, generating periodic heavy showers and thunderstorms throughout the region. Radar data indicates that over 2 inches of rain has already fallen in some locations during the past six hours, with forecasters predicting an additional 2 to 4 inches or more over the next 12 hours.

According to NEMA, a Flash Flood Watch signifies that moderate to major flooding is possible, though not imminent, within the designated watch area. Officials emphasize that flash flooding presents an extremely dangerous situation requiring immediate attention and preparedness.

Residents in vulnerable areas are strongly urged to exercise caution, particularly in locations susceptible to flooding and rockfall. Motorists should avoid parking in waterways and ghauts, and remain vigilant when traveling through potentially hazardous zones.

The advisory comes as part of NEMA’s ongoing commitment to public safety, encouraging citizens to stay informed and prepared throughout the weather event. Authorities recommend monitoring official updates and practicing safe weather protocols until conditions improve.

NEMA reminds the public that preparedness is key to weathering storms safely, urging everyone to transition “from danger to safety” by heeding all warnings and advisories.
