Former Calypso King Ayatollah Passes

Former Calypso Monarch, Dion Stevens commonly known as King Ayatollah has passed.

ZIZ understands that the well-known Calypsonian died after battling with illness.

The former King captured the top spot at the senior level of the National Carnival Junior Calypso Monarch competition in 1996, 1999 and 2003. He also won the Leeward Island Calypso Competition in 2004.

King Ayatollah was a semi-finalist in last year’s National Carnival Senior Calypso Competition.

Some of his most memorable hits include, “Three long years”, “Kaiso Terrorist” and crowd favourite “Bad Boy King”.

In an official statement on its Facebook page, the National Carnival Committee expressed deepest condolences to his family, friends and fans.

The statement said, “Over the course of his life, the 3-Peat “Bad Boy” King made an enormous contribution to the development of Calypso and to National Carnival in the Federation”.

It continued, “His legacy as a champion of the Calypso art-form will not be forgotten”.
