This week’s episodes of frank and candid on ZIZ radio tackled the issues of vendors in the street.
Host Tony Nias brought to the forefront the issue of street vendors and the right to work in public spaces.
He first noted that street vendors play an integral role in society but persons may argue that the right of the general public to use public spaces are violated when street vendors occupy these places.
He also stated that the rights of the vendors to conduct business should not be at the expense of the general public and there is no enforcement of the laws that govern the use of the sidewalks.
He suggested that a possible solution to the issue is government regulation.
“Government must defend the public space from that type of encroachment and how do they do that? By strictly regulating or in some cases outlawing street vending in certain spaces and at certain times.”
