St. Kitts, October 07, 2010 (SKNIS): Persons visiting the General Post Office (GPO) in Basseterre are now able to send a different kind of mail.
At a brief but symbolic ceremony on Tuesday, Minister responsible for Posts, Honourable Glenn Phillip cut the ribbon to officially open the new internet café service. Three HP (Hewlett Packard) computers offer consumers access to the World Wide Web where they can send Email, browse websites, conduct E-transactions and undertake research. Patrons will also be able to print in colour; at a rate that is less than those charged by other cafés.
Postmaster General, Sandra Davoren told SKNIS that the introduction of this service was a logical step in keeping up with the growth of technology.
“It is a service that is being demanded by our [local] customers as well as the tourists that come to our shores on a weekly basis. They come right through here in the Pelican Mall and ask if we have the service and we are very happy today that we can say to the general public that we now have the service,” Ms. Davoren remarked.

The café is located in the Philatelic Bureau next to the GPO. The operating hours are currently 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays, but the Postmaster General has indicated that a flexible time schedule would be considered to allow consumers to complete their business after 4:00 p.m. Once a demand arises, the internet service could also be made accessible on Saturdays.
Minister Phillip, who also holds the portfolio for Information Technology, indicated that Post Offices in St. Kitts and Nevis are evolving and innovating into an information management platform that will provide credible ways to serve the general public better.
“We also will be unveiling different services like E-wallets, U. S. Postal Boxes and bill payments at all Post Offices on the island,” he said. “Money transfers will also be part of what the Post Office will be doing in the future, so I want to assure the general public that the Post Office will be making more technological advances as it transforms for the future, in order to meet customers’ demands.”
Government officials issued a special appeal for the public to make enquiries to ensure they fully utilize the services at the Post Offices.
