Government Launches Greenhouse Village Initiative

BASSETERRE: Government has  continued it’s drive  toward strengthening national food security with the ongoing development of the greenhouse village initiative at Brotherson Estate, located on the outskirts of Newton Ground.

Prime Minister The Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew said the Greenhouse Village Initiative is one of the many ways of advancing the Government’s vision of a Sustainable Island State.

“We are taking deliberate steps to reduce our food import bill and keep more of our resources within our country,” the PM said. “We are investing in our farmers, investing in our people, and we are securing our future!”

This forward-thinking project will see the construction of 24 modern greenhouses, each dedicated to the cultivation of high-demand crops such as sweet peppers, tomatoes, and lettuce.

The greenhouse village is designed to empower local farmers through access to climate-smart technology, structured training programmes, and a supportive production environment.

Special emphasis is being placed on encouraging the participation of young farmers and women in agriculture.

Upon completion, the initiative will enhance local food production, reduce the Federation’s reliance on imports, and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable agricultural sector.
