Landfill Fire Spreads to Tire Storage

BASSETERRE — The Solid Waste Management Corporation is battling a major fire at the island’s landfill facility that has spread from a construction debris cell to an adjacent tire storage area, raising concerns about air quality across the island.

The fire, which began in the Construction and Demolition cell, exceeded the on-site suppression resources available to SWMC, forcing emergency responders to deploy additional containment measures. Despite immediate efforts to control the blaze, the intensity of the flames allowed it to breach containment and reach the facility’s tire storage section.

The St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority confirmed that the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport, situated near the landfill, faces no immediate threat and continues normal operations. However, residents in surrounding communities are experiencing smoke and air quality impacts.

SWMC has urged the public to exercise precautions, particularly vulnerable populations. The corporation advised residents to keep windows and doors closed where possible, limit outdoor activity, and monitor advisories from authorities. Children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions face heightened risk from the smoke.

“We are committed to keeping the public fully informed as the situation develops,” SWMC said in a statement. The corporation extended gratitude to the Royal St. Kitts and Nevis Police Force, SCASPA, and the St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services for their collaborative response.

“The collaborative efforts of these agencies have been instrumental in managing this incident and safeguarding the surrounding community,” the statement noted. SWMC said it would continue providing updates as the situation progresses and apologized for any inconvenience or disruption caused by the incident.

Response and containment operations remain actively ongoing. Residents experiencing respiratory distress should seek medical attention and contact emergency services if needed.
