Launch of Bin Distribution

Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 11, 2020 (ZIZ News): Minister with responsibility for the Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC), Hon. Eugene Hamilton has announced the launch of the SWMC’s bin distribution programme.

During a televised statement on Tuesday, Minister Hamilton said upon completion of the schedule for the distribution, some 12,000 standardized bins will be given to homes across St. Kitts free of charge.

He explained that this initiative is phase three of the SWMC’s five point strategic plan and it will be followed by a number of other initiatives that will help “to improve the overall efficiency and integrity of its waste collection and disposal services”.

Minister Hamilton said the distribution period will run for six weeks and it begins on March 16th, 2020 during which each home will get one 65-gallon “smart” bin.

These “smart” bins, the minister explained, are designed with unique bar codes and serial numbers to facilitate easier distribution and inventory control, they will be labelled to help persons identify items to be disposed of that are permitted and prohibited.

In an effort to prevent theft and other illegal activities the movement of the bins will be tracked by the SWMC.

He said that this initiative “will improve the sanitary conditions and provide an excellent opportunity for citizens to properly store their waste, prior to collection days”.
