Ministry of Education to Push TVET in 2014

(ZIZ)The Ministry of Education has been allocated $63,633,726 to carry out its programmes and activities for 2014 which is a 12 percent increase over its 2013 allocation.

Minister of Education, Hon. Nigel Carty, speaking at the 2014 Budget Address held this week said Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) continues to be at the centre of the ministry’s plans to improve education, in order to improve the link between education and the world of work.

Minister Carty said that while being academically inclined has its benefits, it is becoming necessary for persons to have certifiable skills they can take from school and college into the work force.

He said, “The development that has been taking place in our country in the construction sector, in the services sector requires that we produce people who have the skills to deliver those services.”

Carty said the more people that can play a part in the country’s development, the better it becomes for the economy, adding “If there is a demand for houses to be built, for AC units to be repaired, for the wiring of the houses to be done and our local people are not prepared…the services will be given to people who are not locals.”

Just recently a draft National TVET Policy was presented which focuses on TVET as critical for ensuring that all citizens are equipped with the knowledge, competencies and values needed for self fulfilment, entrepreneurship and employment.
