New Carnival Chair Appointed

Sylvester Anthony

Basseterre, St Kitts – 4th October 2012 – The National Carnival Committee (NCC) has a new Chairman in the person of Mr. Sylvester Anthony.

In a letter addressed to the Secretary of the NCC, Honourable Minister Marcella Liburd, Minister with responsibility for Carnival, notified the Committee of her selection of Mr. Anthony to act as Chair for the 2012-2013 Carnival Season.

In accepting the Minister’s invitation to act as Chair for the upcoming season, Mr. Anthony promised that Sugar Mas 41 should be even more exciting than Sugar Mas 40:40.

“This year”, he stated, “we have set as our goal to increase the level of participation in, as well as to improve the quality of our street activities”. “We need to have more people jumping on the streets in troupes, rather than standing on the sidelines as observers”. “As well, we need to get more young people involved in carnival” he added.

“We also need to take some pre-carnival activities, such as calypso tents, out into the rural districts and into Nevis, if we are to make this a truly national event”, he concluded. “But”, he noted, “this will take a lot of coordination and cooperation since the Committee cannot do it on its own”.

The new Chair confirmed that even prior to his appointment, the National Carnival Committee had been meeting and began making plans for this year’s celebrations. Since his appointment, meetings have been held with various stakeholders to discuss their involvement in the upcoming activities. More details will be released shortly.

In addition to his new responsibilities as Chair of Carnival, Mr. Anthony continues to serve as Chair of the Subcommittee responsible for Calypso and Soca Monarch.
