Basseterre — The National Secretariat for Human Security and Well-Being has launched its first annual “Own Your Summer” programme to keep young people aged 13 to 18 engaged and supported during the long school holiday period.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader human security approach and aims to reduce vulnerability during the summer months when students are out of school and at higher risk of idleness or negative influences.
Coordinator Kerry explained that the programme will build on existing community efforts by expanding access to structured, positive activities. It will be delivered through partnerships with community groups, camps, businesses, and other organisations across St. Kitts and Nevis.
Activities will include sports, mentorship, skills training, creative programmes, and educational sessions. Older participants will also have access to internship and exposure opportunities.
Officials say the focus is on prevention, early intervention, and creating safe, productive environments that promote youth development and social resilience.
Community organisations and youth groups are being encouraged to partner with the secretariat to help expand the reach and impact of the programme.
The “Own Your Summer” initiative complements the newly announced Youth Economic Empowerment Bureau, forming part of a coordinated government strategy to support young people both during the holiday season and throughout the year.
Parents and guardians are urged to take advantage of the programme and get involved in community activities that will keep their children safe, active, and learning over the summer months.
